Fox & Geese
Board Games · 2 playsFox & Geese
A lone fox and a flock of thirteen geese on an old cross-shaped board — pick the hunter or the flock.
Quick start
Geese step a single point forward or sideways; they never retreat or leap. Boxing the fox in wins it for them. The fox steps one point whichever way the lines allow and takes geese by leaping over them, several in a row if it can. The fox triumphs if the flock falls below six, or once forty moves pass with nothing taken and no goose stepping forward. The fox goes first. Pick an animal and a level: Easy, Medium or Hard.

About this game
A farmyard game that has been played on cross-shaped boards for hundreds of years. The flock of thirteen shuffles forward or to the side, never retreating, hoping to corner the fox so it has no legal step. The fox moves a single point along any line, takes a goose by leaping it onto the empty point beyond, and can string several leaps together. The fox wins if the flock dwindles below six, or if forty moves pass in which nothing is taken and no goose steps forward. Play either animal at three levels of difficulty, with undo available. Free to play in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.
Family tips
As the flock, advance in a solid line and never leave a hole behind a goose. The fox needs an empty point to land on, so a goose with a friend at its back is safe.
As the flock, keep marching. Dawdling too long gives the game to the fox, so make steady progress even when it feels slow.
As the fox, stay mobile and look for double threats. A spot where two geese can be taken at once forces the flock to give one up.
