Break the substitution cipher and reveal the hidden saying.
About Cryptogram
The newspaper puzzle-page favourite, exactly as your Sunday paper served it. A familiar proverb has been scrambled by swapping every letter for another; crack the substitution and read the saying. Frequency, pattern and a feel for the language are your lockpicks — plus three hints for the truly stuck. Old-school pencil pleasure, no pencil required. Free to play in your browser — no download, no sign-up.
How to Play
Tap any letter slot, then type your guess — every matching slot fills in. The small letter below each slot is the coded letter. Decode the whole saying. 💡 reveals one letter (3 per puzzle).
Tips & Strategy
One-letter words are A or I. Three-letter workhorses are THE and AND — crack THE and you own the most common letter in English.
Count repeats: the most frequent coded letter is nearly always E, with T, A, O close behind.
Apostrophe-free puzzles love patterns — a double letter is often LL, SS, EE or OO, and letter pairs like TH, ER and ING give whole words away.
Guess boldly and read the result aloud in your head. A wrong guess makes gibberish fast, and fixing it costs nothing.
