About this game
A small puzzle with a big personality, Suguru comes from Japan and fits neatly into a tea break. The grid is divided into outlined cages of one to five squares. A cage of three holds 1, 2 and 3; a cage of five holds 1 through 5; a single square is always a 1. The twist is that identical numbers may never sit next to each other in any direction, including diagonally. A few numbers are given to start, and each puzzle has exactly one solution. Grids grow from 5×5 to 8×8 as you climb the levels, with points for every solve. Free to play in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.
Family tips
Single-square cages are free 1s, and every 1 rules out the eight squares around it for other 1s. Two-square cages hold a 1 and a 2, so they often settle quickly once a nearby 1 or 2 pushes them one way.
Use the no-touching rule across cage borders. If a five-square cage must put its 5 in one of two squares, any square bordering both of them cannot be a 5 either, whichever way it falls. Deductions like this crack most of the middling puzzles.
Pencil notes earn their keep on the bigger grids. Write the options in small, then strike them out as the cage fills. Remember that a cage of four can never contain a 5, so the largest numbers only live in the largest cages.
