Hitori

Shade out repeated numbers so each row and column is unique, without breaking the white area apart.

Quick start

Tap once to shade a square, twice to mark it safe, three times to clear it. No number may repeat among the unshaded squares in a row or column. Shaded squares canโ€™t share an edge. All unshaded squares must stay connected in one group.

About this game

A puzzle where you take numbers away rather than adding them. The grid comes already filled, with plenty of repeats. Your task is to shade enough squares that no number appears more than once in any row or column among the unshaded squares. Two rules keep you honest: shaded squares may never touch side by side, and all the unshaded squares must stay joined together as one connected area. Tap a square once to shade it, a second time to mark it safe, and again to clear. The levels grow more demanding as you go. Free to play in your browser, with no download and no sign-up.

Family tips

Look for a number sitting between two copies of the same number, like 3-5-3 in a row. One of the 3s must be shaded, and since shaded squares canโ€™t touch, the 5 in the middle must stay white.

Every time you shade a square, mark the squares around it as safe. That simple habit stops you breaking the no-touching rule and often reveals the next deduction.

Watch the connection rule near corners and edges. If shading a square would cut off a white square from the rest of the grid, that square cannot be shaded, which often settles which duplicate must go.
